I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification
Instructions for New Employees โ€” What to Bring on Your First Day

What is Form I-9?

Federal law (Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986) requires every employer in the United States to verify the identity and employment authorization of every person they hire. Form I-9 is the official U.S. government form for this verification. It must be completed on or before your first day of work for pay.

How It Works

1

You complete Section 1 โ€” personal information, attestation of your status, and your signature. You do this yourself, on or before your first day.

2

You present original documents from the lists below. We cannot accept photocopies or digital images โ€” originals only. Documents must be unexpired.

3

Our representative completes Section 2 โ€” they examine your documents and record the information. This is done in your presence, on your first day.

Important: You have the right to choose which documents to present from the lists below. We cannot tell you which specific documents to bring, only that they must come from the acceptable lists. Do not bring expired documents.

Acceptable Documents

You may present either: (A) one document from List A, or (B) one document from List B AND one document from List C.

List A โ€” Documents that Establish Both Identity AND Work Authorization (One of these is sufficient)
  • U.S. Passport or U.S. Passport Card
  • Permanent Resident Card (Green Card, Form I-551)
  • Foreign passport containing a temporary I-551 stamp or I-551 printed notation
  • Employment Authorization Document (EAD, Form I-766)
  • Foreign passport with Form I-94 bearing unexpired arrival/departure record (nonimmigrant)
  • Passport from the Federated States of Micronesia or Republic of the Marshall Islands
List B โ€” Documents that Establish Identity Only (Must be combined with one List C document)
  • State-issued Driver's License or ID Card (with photo or description)
  • Federal, state, or local government ID card with photo
  • U.S. Military ID card or draft record
  • Military dependent's ID card
  • Native American tribal document
  • U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner card
  • School ID with photograph (if under 18 and unable to present other documents)
List C โ€” Documents that Establish Work Authorization Only (Must be combined with one List B document)
  • Social Security Account Number card (not laminated; not restricted to "Valid for work with DHS authorization")
  • Certification of Birth Abroad (Form FS-545 or DS-1350)
  • U.S. birth certificate or certified copy (Form FS-240)
  • Native American tribal document (if not used as List B)
  • U.S. Citizen ID Card (Form I-197)
  • Resident Citizen ID Card (Form I-179)
  • Employment authorization document issued by DHS (other than those in List A)

Most Common Combination

The vast majority of U.S. citizens bring: Driver's License (List B) + Social Security Card (List C). This is simple, fast, and sufficient.
